Come and visit the incredible medieval village of Minerve. The village is situated on top of the gorge of the River Cesse. It has a naturally strong defensive position. Near the village the river disappears underground in a large, naturally carved tunnel.
During the Albigensian Crusade this village was a refuge for a group of Cathars. The village was besieged by Simon de Montfort during 6 weeks before surrendered.
140 Cathars refused to give up their faith and were being burned to death.
The main bridge leading into the village is closed to all passenger vehicles not owned by residents of Minerve.
Of all of the original fortifications, only the octagonal tower has survived.
Minerve has been selected as one of the most beautiful villages of France, so not to be missed.
